10 November 2006 00:54math writes, Jaysin, wow, that's awesome. i didn't even think of that while i was drawing it, but you're totally right. that is what it is. maybe i should give it a new title... ? love, math+ |
10 November 2006 16:09math writes, yeah- new title: Pavilion Brass. i originally called this drawing 'What Graveyard? I Said Ponies!' i wanted a daft title; basically, i didn't want the drawing to read as overt AIDS art, what with gay boys fucking and ghosts [and some bottles to boot though they're not supposed to be pill bottles, oh and are those + signs we see between the 2 boys? i swear to god, i didn't notice any of this imagery while doing it]. i mean, naturally, the drawing can be about AIDS, and it certainly lends itself to that meaning, but i also wanted to make a lighter reading seem sensible, hence a jokey title. when i finished this drawing, i noticed the hmm-ish AIDS imagery immediately. [i mean, my style is already enough like Haring's and Basquiat's- AIDS art would approach overkill. i actually think AIDS, more than any other disease, would be a super-interesting topic for comic/colorful-line art in 2006, but i dunno if that's my investigation to make really.] what i totally did not notice about this drawing is something way cooler: without consciously intending to, i drew boys fucking in the grass at a carnival. Jaysin saw it, and i mean, yeah: 'perfect' to the point of DUH. i only have to glance at the drawing to see how obvious it is that i drew exactly what Jaysin said. i'm used to drawing locations from photographic reference, and since i don't have any carnival photos, i just didn't realize. while making it, i drew the ghosts from a photo of some Halloween decorations that were up in my neighborhood, and the abstracted carousel horse etc w/out reference. the carousel stuff looks like my typical margin doodles so i newly christen this drawing Pavilion Brass. it's named after 'the only brass band in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham'. Pavilion Brass appear to play the Dagenham Carnival most years, and they did for sure in 2003, so let's say these are boys fucking in the grass at the 2003 Dagenham Carnival, to the sounds of a brass band. Jaysin, thanks again, seriously. if you want to tell me what you see in any of my other drawings, i'd be honored. love, math+ |
